A preliminary review suggests that social media impact decision making by creating more connections to receive information and opinions. People tend to trust the opinions of participants in online networks in which they have chosen to participate.
This statistic presents the influence of social media on U.S. consumer purchasing decisions as of May 2018. During the consumer survey it was found that 48 percent of respondents had purchased products or services discovered through social, but only 18 percent had made a purchase directly through social media.

China is the biggest social media market worldwide, ahead of second-ranked India with close to 350 million current social media users. Social network usage has been constantly undergoing double-digit growth which is projected to last until 2016 after which it will slow down to single-digit growth until 2017.
A Deloitte report highlighted that consumers who are influenced by social media are 4 times more likely to spend more on purchases. Moreover, the influence can be so high that 29% of consumers re more likely to make a purchase on the same day of using social media.
Key Findings. While differences in the level of influence were found across industries, social media was deemed influential in making decisions and seeking advice. Social media was identified as being influential by 40% of respondents across generational categories in their decision – making related to travel.
Social media may promote negative experiences such as:
- Inadequacy about your life or appearance.
- Fear of missing out (FOMO).
- Depression and anxiety.
- A fear of missing out (FOMO) can keep you returning to social media over and over again.
Why Are Millennials Using Social? Although Millennials have an array of reasons for using social media, the largest percentage of respondents said the main reasons are to stay up-to-date with news and current events (36%) and/or to find funny and entertaining content (36%).
Research from Yes Lifecycle Marketing revealed that more than 80% of Gen Z is influenced by social media when it comes to making purchases, compared to their next-oldest counterparts, millennials (74%). Interestingly enough, these numbers drop quite dramatically when compared to Gen X (58%) and baby boomers (41%).
The Social Proof Theory, popularized by psychologist Robert Cialdini, maintains that a person who does not know what the proper behavior for a certain situation is, will look to other people to imitate what they are doing and to provide guidance for his actions.
Who uses Instagram the most?
As of July 2021, India was the leading country based on Instagram audience size with 180 million users accessing the photo sharing and editing app, followed by the United States with 170 million users. Brazil ranked third with 110 million Instagram users, ahead of Indonesia with an audience of 93 million users. 5
What age group uses TikTok the most?
Roughly 50% of TikTok’s global audience is under the age of 34 with 32.5% aged between 10 and 19. 41 percent of TikTok users are aged between 16 and 24. TikTok users spend an average of 52 minutes per day on the app. In less than 18 months, the number of US adult TikTok users grew 5.5 times.
